The Colombo South Teaching Hospital was started on the 02 July 1960 by the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, as a Base Hospital. The Hospital was upgraded to a Teaching Hospital in 1995. Currently it is the second largest government hospital in Colombo district, located in Kalubowila. The hospital has a bed strength of 1093 with 2320 staff involved in patient care. It provides treatment to about 150 000 inward patients and 75 000 out patients per year.
The hospital is spread on 18 acres of land, and it is becoming increasingly popular and greatly increasing the services to the public through its largest Out Patient Department ,New eight storied building and a theatre complex with 6 new theaters and most of all the sincere service of the staff. A four storied building for a new Psychiatry Unit came into being in 2001and anther section for new radiology unit, laboratory services and the finer specialties, is planned to be built. It serves as the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura while functioning under the Ministry of Health. The head of the institute is the director. In addition to the University professorial units, the hospital runs an out patients department (OPD) round the clock and admits inpatients to wards of all major disciplines and several medical specialties. In addition to the honorary consultants (specialists) from the faculty, there are about 49 other consultants (specialists) in anaesthesia, histopathology, orthopaedics, eye surgery, neurology, ENT surgery, chemical pathology, haematology, judicial medicine, microbiology, rheumatology, dermatology, gastroenterology, radiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, oral-maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, medicine, cardiology, paediatrics, surgery, genitor urinary surgery, orthodontics, psychiatry, endocrinology, transfusion medicine, vascular and plastic surgery serving CSTH. The hospital is also equipped with intensive care units for medical, surgical and neonatal patients and special unit to treat sexually transmitted diseases. There is also an acupuncture centre located within the hospital premises training and serving local and foreign individuals, even though it has no affiliation to the hospital.
