Established in 1927, it is Sri Lanka’s largest tertiary care institution, and was opened for patients from 31st of January 1929.
Their service is rendered exclusively to the mental health needs of the population. With the support of about 500 dedicated staff members, care for over 1000 residential patients.
Several recently introduced specialized units such as the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, General Medical Ward, Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, Perinatal Psychiatry Unit , Adolescent psychiatry Unit and the Learning Disability Unit further strengthens the routine psychiatric services offered by the Institute. Half Way Home, Mulleriyawa(HWHM) and the School of Nursing, Mulleriyawa are also under the administration of NIMH since 2008.
The NIMH has a total of around 1500 beds including HWHM providing care for all types of mental illnesses. Annually over 8000 patients are admitted to NIMH and provides acute and intermediate care, as well as specialized services.
NIMH has won several awards for the excellent work it had done. These include: Bronze Medal among the curative care, large scale health institutions at National Health Excellence Awards 2010 and an award in the Inter-department category at the National Productivity award 2010/2011.
