General Hospital (GH), Trincomalee is the apex health institution in Trincomalee District. This hospital is a tertiary care institution for the whole Trincomalee district with an estimated population of 412 000. It is the central referral institution for the other 31 Government Medical institutions within the Trincomalee District.
There has been an increase of the population of Trincomalee District after the peace process and development potentials of industrial sector bring up challenges with new health problems.
Daily it provides health care facilities for nearly 500 - 600 OPD patients and it copes nearly 200 ward admissions and the number of exceeds 400 per month.

General Hospital Ampara, is located in ancient digamadulla area of 
Ampara District. 
It was established as a central dispensary in 1954 under the Galoya Development Project. The hospital facilities and services were expanded in next 50 years. Broad maternal care was provided, after being attached with a maternity home. In 1967 the hospital was upgraded as a district hospital. Then in 1974 the hospital was upgraded as a base hospital and added a lot of health care facilities. and was upgraded as a General Hospital in 2001.  It had nearly 1300 employees, bed strength of 557 in 2013, with a number of average 125-150 ward admissions, around 600 OPD admissions and 400-500 clinic admissions. It is the only tertiary care hospital for entire Ampara District, which renders its services to a population of 780,000.
Currently it has a number of well functioning units including Anaesthesia, Cardiology, Medicine, General surgery, Microbiology, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Dermatology and haematology. The units of critical care include MICU, SICU, CCU, Neonatal ICU other than the PCU.
Within last few years the hospital was presented with a number of awards nationally and internationally including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 due to it well organized health facilities cleanliness and courteous service of the hospital staff. The Ampara hospital was selected as the best hospital in the Asia Pacific Region by the Asia Pacific Quality Organization for 2007.

Teaching Hospital - Kurunegala



Teaching Hospital Kurunegala, which was established in late 1890s , renders a great service for the people in North Western province ,patients from the other districts also, namely Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Mathale. It is situated on the Colombo Kurunegala road about 0.75 k.m. away from the city towards Colombo. It has inward , outpatient departments and clinic facilities. The funtioning units include, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatric, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Gynaecology and Obstetric, Orhopaedic, Neonatology, Neurology,Psychiatry, ENT Surgery, Maxiilofacial surgery , Opthlamic surgery, Genito-urinary Surgery, 
Surgical Oncology and Chest medicine.
The bed strength is over 1700 and the staff is 3078.The hospital spreads over 35 acres land and servers people through more than 100 units.The Teaching Hospital Kurunegala caters more than one million patients annually.
The average outside patients are coming to the hospital for treatment counts more than 20% of the annual total. Over 20,000 Obstetric admissions and over 14,000 deliveries take place annualy in THK.Over 24,000 minor and 12,000 major surgeries are also performed annually,in order to provide better healthcare to the people.
The medical laboratory at Teaching Hospital Kurunegala offers a tremendous service to the patients ,carring out over 60,000 investigations per month. For the past few years the hospital had a rapid development programme in infrastructure and improvement in quality of work together.

Mahamodara teaching hospital in Galle is a large hospital complex, with about 400 beds, which plays the role of frame of reference for the whole area of southern Sri Lanka for maternal and child health speciality.As the only maternity teaching hospital in Southern Province, it provides maternal care, neonatal care and training for medical students, student nurses, student mid-wives and doctors who study for their postgraduate in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and sub fertility.
With the post-tsunami rehabilitation work, the hospital restarted its functions in Mahamodara.

Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya

The Teaching Hospital Karapitiya (THK) is the largest Tertiary care centre in Southern Province and it was established in 1982. THK is the main clinical training institute for the Faculty of Medicine, Karapitiya. It consists of 1560 beds and 54 wards and several other units.

Teaching Hospital - Anuradhapura






Anuradhapura has been the forefront of medical services in Sri Lanka, from the days of ancient kings. According to the archaeological reports the monuments of the ancient hospital in Mihintale which was built by King Sena II dates back to the 9th century.

Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital is the third biggest hospital in Sri Lanka and situated at central location of the new city occupying a total land area of 18069 hectares. It caters to a population of 1.1 million in the north central province and to about 0.5 million of adjoining northern and western provinces. It had a bed strength of 2029 in 2017. The annual indoor admissions are over 100000 and the number of live births that take place in the hospital exceeds 10000 annually. Also the average daily attendance of patients (Clinic and OPD) exceeds 1200. In March 2018 the constructions for a new Accident service and the emergency treatment unit started with an estimated cost of 528 million rupees.
At that time the hospital was facilitated with 264 medical officers (Although the required carder is 400) , 955 nursing officers, 15 Radiographers and 11 ECG technicians. And the above staff was a significantly lower number than the required.  
The dedicated work of the staff of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital was remarkable , during the humanitarian operations in the Wanni, nursing thousands of injured soldiers. Also this is the primary teaching hospital of the students of the faculty of Medicine, University of Rajarata.
