The origin of Mulleriyawa Hospital go back to the 1960′s. It is situated in the heart of Colombo East blends in with its surrounding residential neighborhoods of Kolonnawa, Kaduwela, Kelaniya and Kotikawatte. The land area was about 117 acres. The Mulleriyawa Mental Hospital opened its doors in early 70′s and merged with Nurses Training School in 1980′s. Then it was named as Mental Hospital (Teaching) – Mulleriyawa. It was consisted of two units namely Unit 01(for male patients) and Unit 02 (for female patients).
In 1977, District Hospital – Mulleriyawa was established, close to the Mental Hospital – Mulleriywa, and opened its doors for all type of patients. In April 2007, the Mental Hospital (Teaching) – Mulleriyawa was de-amalgamated. The Unit 02 of the Mental Hospital and Nurses Training School has been amalgamated to the National Institute of Mental Health – Angoda.
The remaining Unit 01 of Mental Hospital and District Hospital – Mulleriyawa have been converted as “Base Hospital – Mulleriyawa”. It is one of the fast growing hospitals in Colombo region, and is renamed as the "Colombo East Base Hospital" on 2013, and scheduled to become the “Colombo East Teaching Hospital (CETH)” in near future.
Base Hospital Mulleriyawa (BHM) is one of Colombo region major acute government hospitals and provides services to the people living in the Colombo East Region. BHM has a comprehensive range of specialist units listed below including Respiratory Medicine and Transfusion Medicine.
