This hospital was opened on 1st October 1895, during the colonial period and first medical superintendent was Dr F.V Foenander.
Avissawella Base Hospital now consists of most of medical specialties including Medical, Surgical, Pediatric Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardiology, Psychiatric, Dermatology, Chest, Ophthalmology, E.N.T and OMF units. It has ICU facilities and an Operation theater with 4 surgical beds with an endoscopy unit. Also it provides a good out patient service minimizing inward admissions with its well functioning Preliminary care unit which was launched recently with Korean aids.
